Storing and Handling Lyophilized Peptides in the Lab

By NorthLabs Peptides

Peptides are sensitive molecules. How they are stored and handled in a laboratory directly affects their stability over time. This guide covers general best practices for lyophilized (freeze-dried) research peptides.

Why Lyophilization Matters

Peptides are most stable in their lyophilized form — a dry powder produced by freeze-drying. Removing water dramatically slows the chemical and physical degradation pathways that occur in solution. This is why research peptides are shipped and stored as powders until they are needed.

Temperature Guidelines

General storage recommendations for lyophilized peptides:

DurationRecommended Temperature
Short term (days–weeks)2–8°C (refrigerated)
Long term (months+)−20°C or colder

Always consult the stability data on the product's Certificate of Analysis, as optimal conditions can vary by compound.

Protect From Moisture

Moisture is a primary enemy of lyophilized peptides. Each freeze–thaw or exposure to humid air can introduce water that accelerates degradation.

Protect From Light

Some peptide sequences — particularly those containing tryptophan, tyrosine, or methionine residues — are sensitive to light. Store vials in opaque containers or in the dark.

After Reconstitution

Once a peptide is reconstituted into solution, its stability decreases. Reconstituted peptides are generally stored at 2–8°C for short-term use. Many laboratories prepare single-use aliquots to avoid repeated freeze–thaw cycles, each of which can reduce integrity.

Our reconstitution calculator can help you plan concentration and aliquot volumes.

Minimizing Freeze–Thaw Cycles

Repeated freezing and thawing is one of the most common causes of peptide degradation in the lab. Dividing a reconstituted solution into smaller working aliquots means you only thaw what you need, leaving the rest undisturbed.

Summary

Keep lyophilized peptides cold, dry, and dark. Bring vials to room temperature before opening, limit air exposure, and once reconstituted, aliquot to avoid repeated freeze–thaw cycles. Good handling discipline preserves the quality you paid for.
